Assessment and Feedback
Assessment is a part of the planning and learning process and not just something that happens at the end of a unit or course. All assessment documents should be related to the learning goals and objectives and should be shared with the student at the beginning of the unit so the student has a clear understand of what is expected and what will be assessed. In addition, examples of student work should be shared so the student can see what the expectation is. Through the use of clear objectives and examples, assessment can be a part of the learning experience for the student instead of just an evaluation of what the student has done.
Self and Peer Assessment
An important part of the learning process is the opportunity to self assess your work as well as to receive feedback from peers. There are a variety of ways to do this and it should be done before submitting a major project. Students should review their own work as well as the work of their classmates and compare it to a rubric. In addition to the benefit of receiving peer feedback, the additional benefit of looking at another's work helps a student to make comparisons to their own work so they can make improvements based on what they see.
Feedback
Instructor feedback throughout the course is an important part of the learning process. Feedback is different from evaluation as it is specific to the learning goal or objective and does not place judgment on the student's work. According to Grant Wiggins in his article, Assessment as Feedback, "Feedback is information about how we did in light of some goal." (Wiggins).
